Abstract:
For SMEs to realise their full potential as an engine of growth, it is important to create a favourable environment that allows them to expand and prosper. Despite the Government of Botswana’s past and present notable initiatives to make the environment conducive for SMEs and other businesses th rough such schemes as the Financial Assistance Policy (FAP) and the Citizen E n t re p re n e u rial Development Agency (CEDA), re c e n t studes seem to bemoan the existence of a business environment that still needs a lot of improvement. This study is an expedition to find out, using a more inquisitive approach, the state of affairs for doing business vis-àvis the performance and competitiveness of the SMEs. As a firm-level survey, the study investigates the SME firms in an attempt to answer questions pertaining to their performance and competitiveness.
