Les déterminants de la formulation d'un avenir en rupture: le cas des ambitions stratégiques

Abstract: Mission, vision, or strategic intent, the articulation of a radical future is identified as a source of competitive advantage and sustainable performance. An exploratory study leads us to identify a new form of discourse : strategic ambition. The first objective of our research is to solve an apparent paradox : while ambition is the most frequent type in our exploratory study, it is nearly absent in the literature. Our content analysis of 71 radical future descriptions collected in annual reports of French multinational companies between 1996 and 2004 concludes that ambition differs from mission and vision. The second objective of our research is to develop and test a model of strategic ambition disclosure. We test 8 variables collected in the literature in a 40 companies sample in three periods: 1996, 2000 and 2004. Our results show two explanations to the communication of a strategic ambition: the internal heterogeneity and the internal turbulence.
