LIBERTY AND THE STATE

Edited by Charles Rowley

in Books from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: An important insight of public choice scholarship applied in democratic settings is that majoritarian democracy results in the tyranny of the majority. This tyranny generates a mercantilistic rent seeking society that restricts personal liberties and trespasses on economic rights. Yet, social choice scholars ignore public choice and contrive to promulgate social engineering solutions to the ephemeral dislocations that economic forces inevitably impose, thereby unleashing majoritarian democracy and further eroding the classical liberal order.
