Abstract: In the mid-nineteenth century, France was the second industrial power in the world. However, she was soon to be overtaken by the US, Germany and Japan and also badly suffered from the World Wars and the depression of the 1930s. The literature in these volumes covers French economic development from 1870 to the present and will be indispensable especially to students of France and Western Europe and of twentieth century economics.
