A polysemous solution to the problem of refugees
.
Chapter 1 in Resettlement as Protection, 2024, pp 1-43 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Resettlement is one of the durable solutions UNHCR has been charged to pursue. Resettlement is dependent on the discretionary power of states to offer resettlement places, and the number of available places fluctuates. The chapter focuses on UNHCR’s definition of resettlement: an ambiguously defined solution that has, moreover, been turned into a polysemous one as well. It is explained why an unambiguous definition is necessary. The chapter sets out the object and purpose of the book.
