Medical tourism developments within the Middle East

Abstract: Seeking health care abroad is not a new development for the Arab countries. Medical tourism is reviewed against the background of the fast transformation that has occurred in the development of the health systems of the counties of the region, especially the oil-rich countries. Distinction is made between the recent trend of seeking care abroad as ‘medical tourism’ and treatment abroad due to the relatively underdeveloped medical services in certain countries of the region. The chapter attempts to view medical tourism as an opportunity to improve medical services for all the population ensuring quality, safety and accessibility through the benefits derived from medical tourism. A call is also made to countries and institutions to address the gaps in information and research to improve decision making as regards the international flow of patients to seek care whether regionally or internationally.
