Introduction: female entrepreneurship in China and India

Tonia Warnecke ()

Chapter 1 in From Microfinance To Middle Class?, 2025, pp 2-9 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter frames the book with a discussion of key issues related to entrepreneurship and gender in the developing world. Entrepreneurial activity is diverse, and not all of it represents decent work as defined by the International Labour Organization. Although many countries are pushing for progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, groups of people are left behind with unequal access to education, health care, jobs, public services, and justice. This book focuses on female entrepreneurship, with emphasis on informal sector entrepreneurship. An overview of each chapter in the book is provided. The book is organized into three sections. Part 1 digs into longstanding debates about entrepreneurship and gender, providing a conceptual framework for the book. Part 2 focuses on entrepreneurship in China and India. Part 3 focuses on challenges facing efforts to assist female entrepreneurs, and details various approaches to address each challenge.
