Conclusion: supporting upward mobility for informal sector entrepreneurs
Tonia Warnecke ()
Chapter 12 in From Microfinance To Middle Class?, 2025, pp 187-194 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Concluding the book, this chapter discusses upward mobility for entrepreneurs operating in the informal sector. First, the chapter reviews the key challenges that limit upward mobility for many working in the informal sector; it is important to consider the tiers within the informal sector and the way these affect chances for advancement. Then, several approaches for changemaking are described; each has a role to play in improving women's quality of life, their capabilities and their future opportunities. These include broad-based social and economic policies (such as bolstering social protection, education, health, infrastructure, and childcare), legal reforms, enterprise funding, non-formal education and training, and pathways to formalize the informal sector.
