Entrepreneurship, economic growth, and human development
Tonia Warnecke ()
Chapter 2 in From Microfinance To Middle Class?, 2025, pp 10-28 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the controversial relationship between entrepreneurship, economic growth and human development in the developing world. First, it reviews different perspectives of entrepreneurship and explains how institutions influence entrepreneurial intentions, activity, and performance. Second, it highlights the distinction between opportunity-based and necessity-based entrepreneurship, noting the importance of researching the latter. After reviewing scholarly findings on the entrepreneurship-economic growth relationship, the chapter concludes by emphasizing the critical importance of human development, framing a discussion of necessity-based and opportunity-based entrepreneurship through the lens of the capabilities approach.
