Gender and entrepreneurship: theory and implications
Tonia Warnecke ()
Chapter 3 in From Microfinance To Middle Class?, 2025, pp 29-44 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews several feminist theories (liberal, standpoint, and poststructural) and explains how they relate to the study of entrepreneurship. Different theories about gender reflect different assumptions and beliefs about gender inequality, what causes it, how it impacts people's lived experiences, and how it can be addressed. This connects to a discussion of culture, context, and power. Cultural practices and social norms influence the entrepreneurial environment, shaping our understanding of gender and the way this translates into action.
