Governance: institutions, local leadership and the role of regional development agencies

.

Chapter 3 in Introduction to Regional Economic Development, 2015, pp 36-49 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Good governance is now the new catchword around the world that was advocated by many, particularly international organizations, for almost any purpose ranging from national governments to large corporations and NGOs as well as regional and local economic development. As a result, in recent years the discussion of governance has expanded and the number of scholarly work has increased. The reason behind this new trend is the view that good governance and sustainable development go hand-in-hand. It is, then, quite logical that the same principle applies to regional and local economic development where good governance will generate better results. It is now widely accepted that regional and local institutions and leadership will have important roles in the regional development process. This chapter covers the governance, institutions, local leadership and role of regional development agencies in the regional economic development process.
