Part IV: introduction
Andrew Herod
A chapter in Handbook of Labour Geography, 2025, pp 239-243 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapters in this part address how the state shapes the geographic contexts within which workers find themselves. The first chapter considers whether there are any connections between suburban sprawl and workers’ successes in securing union representation. The second chapter examines how consumers are playing active roles in the UK and South Africa in efforts to force employers to abide by regulations designed to protect workers through working with government labour inspectors. The last chapter recounts how Greek workers have played active roles in shaping housing policy, thereby shaping the built environment of cities like Athens.
