Re-engaging with the state: examining (prospective) links between labour geography and labour inspection

Thomas Hastings

Chapter 14 in Handbook of Labour Geography, 2025, pp 257-269 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter suggests that labour inspection is an important, yet under-examined, government function relevant to Labour Geography. The state is shown as an important regulator which should, in theory, help in the enforcement and production of labour geographies. Despite this role, the state is shown to struggle to enforce the rights of workers within a multitude of ‘hidden’ sectors of the economy. In light of these challenges, faith-based organisations, in particular, are shown to have developed increasingly effective links with state inspectorates to better uphold worker rights and entitlements on the ground. The role of labour in this context is significant for its ability to regulate firms through the sphere of reproduction, as well as the traditional production sphere.
