Labour geography in Eastern Europe
Márton Czirfusz
Chapter 2 in Handbook of Labour Geography, 2025, pp 73-86 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Eastern European geographers have been active in analysing labour issues from a spatial perspective. However, this research strand is too fragmented to be seen as an integrated Labour Geography approach. This chapter discusses three epochs of geographical research on labour – the period of state-socialism after the 1970s economic crisis, the two decades of transformation until the 2008 economic crisis, and the post-2008 long decade until the COVID-19 crisis – and summarises their main topics and approaches. The chapter's final section discusses some prospective directions for future research on labour in/about Eastern Europe.
