The hollowing of democracy
.
Chapter 17 in Morality and Power, 2017, pp 290-300 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 17 revisits a number of the issues raised in Chapter 10 in the light of the arguments presented in Part III. I argue that developments in the neoliberal era raise threats to the future functioning of liberal democracy as we in the West have come to know it. In the words of a prominent critical economist (Joseph Stiglitz) we live in an era in which democracy itself is in peril. A proposal for renewing social democracy is outlined, entailing: orienting according to a progressive ethical compass; replacing orthodox economic analysis and policy tools with a critical political economy that accentuates both ethical commitments and the role of power in reducing existing inequalities and injustices; and using both compass and critique to attack existing inequalities and injustices.
