Chapter 8 in Sports Economics Uncut, 2018, pp 120-138 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In 2003, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased Chelsea Football Club, spent lavishly, and collected Premier League titles in 2004 and 2006. Manchester City FC followed this template to titles in 2012 and 2014. These seem to be simple stories of wealth creating advantage, but the full story of the impact on the Premier League requires deeper examination. The infusion of capital upset the stranglehold that Manchester United and Arsenal held on the league, and allowed lowly Leicester City to shock the sports world by winning the Premier League title in 2016. Chapter 8 combines the Premier League story with others to express an important reality about the nature of equality and inequality– simplistic conclusions are likely to be wrong. The measurement of competitive balance is tricky, as is attributing causes and effect. Data ranging from the performance of the Yankees over time, to NFL playoff appearances, and on to college football outcomes offer evidence of this complexity.
