Transit oriented development in Montréal: past, present and future

Abstract: Montréal has seen only mitigated success with transit oriented development. While the downtown core and the inner suburbs have been shaped by transit (streetcar, commuter rail and subway), the outer suburbs have adopted an automobile-dependant form. Two conclusions emerge from this case study. First, frequency is a major factor in the success or failure of transit in shaping suburbs. Second, Montreal’s urban and regional planning tools are insufficient in shaping the metropolitan area. The redevelopment around existing subway stations as well as on the new Réseau Express Métropolitain line is significantly reshaping Montréal’s suburbs. Industrial parks and devitalized shopping areas are becoming high density vibrant neighbourhoods.Â
