Chapter 1 in Teaching Environmental Impact Assessment, 2021, pp 3-16 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a tool used worldwide to inform decision making associated with new development proposals in order to contribute to sustainable development. There is a long history of teaching and training on EIA which falls into two broad types directed respectively to technical specialists involved in particular tasks or types of impact assessment and generalists needing to understand the overall process and who may serve as EIA managers. Four types of EIA teaching are identified being undergraduate university degree courses, postgraduate university degree courses, short courses and on-the-job training. Literature about each form is reviewed to explain the nature of university EIA teaching and professional training; their similarities and points of difference. EIA itself is a learning process for stakeholders involved; formal EIA teaching is a complement to this.
