Chapter 10 in Teaching Environmental Impact Assessment, 2021, pp 266-267 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Summary reflections on EIA teaching over the past four decades are provided. The main approaches to teaching EIA and the principles that underpin them have stood the test of time. A greater emphasis on the socio-political aspects of EIA is evident in the more recent literature on teaching and training. There has been a significant increase in emphasis since the early years on ‘learning by doing’, not just through classroom-based simulations but increasingly through much longer and more advanced student-directed university projects. Learning technologies have changed over time. Online learning provides some additional advantages relative to in-class teaching, such as the potential for diverse students to participate, and access to sophisticated learning materials. The need for EIA is expected to remain, and the core principles that guide the teaching of EIA are likely to endure.
