Chapter 17 in Research Handbook on Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies, 2020, pp 325-353 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The evolutionary dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems encompasses the role of institutions and sociocultural elements in determining entrepreneurial motivations and behaviours. This chapter engages in discursive prose from one context to another based on previous African entrepreneurship research. It adopts a systematic literature review that examines 57 outputs between 2009 and 2018 that identified 36 journal articles, 18 books and 3 other publications. It provides a resource for understanding elements of African entrepreneurship, the entrepreneurial ecosystem, its barriers and challenges. Given that there is a paucity of research about African entrepreneurship in mainstream entrepreneurship journals, this study indicates the gaps in knowledge and provides a comprehensive framework to understand and advance future research.
