Academic entrepreneurship in developing countries: contextualizing recent debate

Abstract: This chapter presents recent debate on academic entrepreneurship and the role of universities in exploiting it; more specifically, it concentrates on how entrepreneurship exists and survives at universities for the purpose of economic development. It also attempts to develop a basic understanding of academic entrepreneurship in the developing world. The discussion focuses on the entrepreneurial aspects of universities which can influence and accelerate the phenomenon of academic entrepreneurship and the potential outcomes in various developing countries. This chapter includes an exploratory study. A literature review is conducted extensively and debate on academic entrepreneurship is presented. Cases of developing countries are discussed. This contribution should promote an awareness for and utilization of academic entrepreneurship in low-income countries as an opportunity from which universities, individuals and society in general can benefit.
