From cultural heritage to local development

Chapter 2 in Cultural Heritage, Creativity and Economic Development, 2019, pp 12-41 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter thoroughly discusses the different values that can be associated with cultural heritage and presents the existing literature on its link with economic development. Subsequently, the perspective of the present book on cultural heritage as a tangible and common element is explained and a traditional econometric model of regional growth is proposed to test the effect of cultural heritage on economic development, also taking the role of tourism into account. The results show that there seems to be no generalized impact of cultural heritage on local performance, unless in the presence of a relevant touristic activity. In the final part of the chapter, a hypothesis related to the existence of more intangible and sophisticated transmission channels between cultural heritage and regional development is put forward.
