From creativity to socioeconomic development

Chapter 6 in Cultural Heritage, Creativity and Economic Development, 2019, pp 110-128 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter aims at exploring the relationship between creativity and economic development, according to the idea that it is the ‘mental cross-fertilization’ between different talents that favours the generation of the best and most original ideas. In this sense, the belief is that single creative talents can have little impact on economic development. It is instead their synergetic interplay that leads to the trigger of novelty and, through this mechanism, to better local performance. After presenting the main existing literature on the impact of creativity on economic development, the overall reasoning is econometrically tested and finally corroborated in the case of Italian provinces (NUTS3).
