Chapter 1 in Food Loss and Food Waste, 2019, pp 1-26 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the relationship between food loss and waste (FLW), food security and sustainable development. It provides an overview of the dimensions and drivers of FLW along the food supply chain in different parts of the world, as well as its environmental and economic dimensions. It discusses the global food security situation and its implications for FLW. The chapter relates FLW to the international debate concerning the Right to Food. It looks at the various international conferences and initiatives which have addressed this issue, such as the World Food Conference, the Rome Declaration and the Global Strategic Framework for Food and Nutrition. It looks at UN joint projects concerned with FLW, as well as national government initiatives and Public/Private collaboration on FLW. Finally, the chapter relates the subject of FLW to the concept of Sustainable Development, including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the relationship between sustainable development, health and FLW.
