Conclusions and a future roadmap for the transition to formality
.
Chapter 12 in A Modern Guide to the Informal Economy, 2023, pp 282-303 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This concluding chapter to the Modern Guide to the Informal Economy synthesises the findings and draws out conclusions on the way forward for measuring, explaining, and tackling the informal economy. This reveals the need for more evidence-based evaluations of the extent, characteristics, and impacts of each of the different types of informal work, along with a need to shift away from simply seeking to eradicate the informal economy by increasing the penalties and risks of detection, and towards formalising the informal economy, and more evaluation of what works and what does not in different contexts across the full range of direct and indirect policy tools available.
