Chapter 2 in China’s Global Vision and Actions, 2020, pp 14-35 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 2 explores shortcomings in China’s domestic situation that led to the 2013 ‘One Belt One Road’ export strategy being encapsulated in Beijing’s 2015 Vision and Actions statement that identified key economic corridors across Eurasia and two blue economic passages. In 2016 the project, covering 64 countries, was rebadged as the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’. A review of the Initiative’s first five years identified that 35 projects had been commenced. By 2020 143 countries were involved; two new blue economic passages gave a global coverage; and Air, Digital and Educational New Silk Road variants were identified.
