Abstract: This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of TWAIL histories across four historical periods: Pre-TWAIL (1900–1945), TWAIL I (1945–1989), TWAIL II (1990s), and TWAIL III (21st century). It traces the evolution of the “Third World” concept in international law from its Cold War origins to its redefinition by 21st-century TWAIL scholars as a critical movement addressing colonial legacies and global inequality. Highlighting key figures and developments in each period, the chapter examines the methodological and political shifts within TWAIL, emphasizing its contributions to the broader “turn to history” in international law scholarship.
