Chapter 1 in Megaproject Leaders, 2021, pp 2-11 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The management of infrastructure megaprojects is perceived as a challenging endeavor due to its complexity, the involvement of multiple stakeholders who may have conflicting interests, and its social and political sensitivity. This book provides opportunities for learning from personal views of megaproject leaders, how they overcame challenges faced in such infrastructure projects. The book is based on the collective and collaborative effort of 18 well-known international academics in the domain of megaprojects who interviewed 16 megaproject leaders in Europe, Asia, Oceania and North America. Through a biographical approach derived from social sciences, personal narratives on the lives and experiences of leaders are documented. These narratives allow us to better understand the role(s) of these leaders and thus disseminate knowledge on how to deliver infrastructure megaprojects despite their challenges.
