Chapter 13 in Megaproject Leaders, 2021, pp 201-214 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the structural and human agency factors that contributed to the improved performance in two megaprojects, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and Dalian Bay Subsea Tunnel, implemented by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) in China. The data for this chapter was collected by interviewing the Vice Project Manager Ma Zonghao from his personal perspective. Ma participated in managing the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and then became leader of a similar project of Dalian Bay Subsea Tunnel. The structural aspects of attention and human aspects of mindfulness in the two megaprojects are key ideas investigated in Ma’s story. The key ideas from the success of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was passed on to Dalian Bay Subsea Tunnel by forming a professional management team who used attention and mindfulness throughout the project life cycle in Dalian.
