Abstract:
Megaprojects are complex in themselves and complex to manage. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a case in point, with its scale, duration and stakeholders’ involvement. In this chapter, we examine the traits of two Swiss leaders who have contributed to the realization of the tunnel. When researching for and writing this chapter, we learned about this legendary megaproject that epitomizes the spirit of the Swiss but, more specifically, highlights the importance of the need for diverse skills in different project phases and of adopting a governance structure that facilitates decision-making.
