University–industry collaboration: why it matters

Chapter 1 in Networks, SMEs, and the University, 2021, pp 1-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the roles of universities within economies and the importance and impact of their collaborations with SMEs. It presents a brief overview of the differences between SMEs and larger firms in terms of the propensity to engage with universities and their outcome of this engagement. In doing so, the chapter explains the rationale for focusing on SMEs and the research questions addressed by the book. Finally, the chapter outlines the methodological approach used for the book’s analysis.
