Abstract: Sports play an important role in social life, community development, political identities, personal aspirations and economic advancement. Recognising sports’ significance, this chapter makes a case for directing increased scholarly attention to African women’s sport. Through a narrative presentation of the author’s intellectual trajectory to sport studies, the chapter argues that an analytical focus on African women’s sports opens up new avenues for scholarly engagement with social movements that seek equality for women and gender expansive Africans. As the most popular sport in Africa, football receives special treatment. The chapter presents queer African studies as an important theoretical and political framework through which to study women’s sports in Africa. A queer African studies approach to examining women’s sport in Africa can undermine the weight of heterosexual patriarchy in sports and help imagine and realise more just societies.
