Filing the podium: cheating, doping and corruption

Abstract: The fundamental underpinning of sport is ‘fairness’ - epitomised by the level playing field concept. However, like any activity where there are winners and losers, cheating and corruption affect it. Doping constitutes a major challenge to the integrity of sport, yet while our knowledge of the reasons why athletes dope is advanced, we still do not know the prevalence and consequently the gravity of the issue. Then there is the cheating and corruption, both on the field, often as a result of gambling, and off it, with the issue of bribery haunting major events. Vexing sport currently is the question of who can compete against whom, with sex/gender categories dividing athletes and administrators. If we use the past to predict the future then it looks bleak for sporting integrity. The only thing we can see coming is the further erosion of athlete rights as technologies of surveillance become ever more intrusive.
