Chapter 6 in Research Handbook on Sports and Society, 2021, pp 69-82 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter looks at the economic determinants of sport performance. After having introduced the rationale for this kind of studies, it exhibits more specifically what has motivated the authors to develop research on this topic and how they conduct it. Testing the determinants of sport performance in sports economics relies on an econometric methodology of multiple linear regressions. The determinants tested in most recent researches are provided, with a distinction between studies focusing on national teams’ sport performance in international sport contests and sport performance across domestic leagues. The chapter then derives the resulting explanation of sport performance with an emphasis on the value added by sports economics and some recommendations in terms of competition management and forecasting. The conclusion summarises the content developed in the chapter.
