The industry of gambling on sport: deconstructing sports betting as a market, a product and a public health issue
Hibai Lopez-Gonzalez
Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on Sports and Society, 2021, pp 83-96 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter argues that the rise of sports betting since the advent of internet gambling is a manifestation of modern sport’s essential search for quantification and rationality. By means of a series of illustrative examples, the main pillars of the industry of sports betting are outlined here. Navigating through data providers, media companies, fantasy sports providers, poker and trading firms, the chapter presents sports betting as a large network of interactions. It contends that the traditional bad reputation associated with gambling becomes, in the case of sports betting, attenuated by the positive connotations of partnering with sport. As a whole, sports betting is seen here as a complex dual phenomenon. On the one hand, betting is a blooming industry in expansion with growing interactions with adjacent areas such as gaming and fantasy sports. On the other hand, sports betting is seen as a controversial commodity that creates integrity issues (match-fixing) and risk behaviours (addiction to gambling).
