GIScience through the looking glass

Barbara P. Buttenfield

Chapter 1 in Handbook of Spatial Analysis in the Social Sciences, 2022, pp 2-15 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Geographic Information Science (GIScience) is a young discipline relative to social science and geography. It has made several contributions to social science and spatial analysis, particularly in the areas of managing large geospatial data sets, facilitating access to data from heterogeneous data sources, and integrating otherwise disparate layers of information with georeferenced coordinates. The chapter uses a dual lens to explain methods development by which GIScience provides a robust information infrastructure for social science, and conceptual initiatives in social science that have brought about changes in GIScience practices. The chapter summarizes the roots of the discipline, past achievements and currently emerging trends. The chapter completes with continuing challenges that should be addressed to continue advances in geospatial data analytics for social science applications.
