Uncertainty
David C. Folch
Chapter 33 in Handbook of Spatial Analysis in the Social Sciences, 2022, pp 544-558 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Uncertainty is fundamental to spatial social science due to the myriad challenges surrounding the study of people and their environment. Since uncertainty cannot be eliminated, the challenge facing researchers is how to minimize its effects and be transparent about its presence. This chapter takes a broad view of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of uncertainty, the importance of balancing research goals with uncertainty and emphasizes transparency in the presentation of results.
