Shift your thinking
.
Chapter 3 in How to Stop Being Stuck with your Academic Writing, 2024, pp 61-85 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This section is all about ways you can get unstuck by thinking differently about writing. Some of the beliefs about writing that we subscribe to are examined: lone scholars; writing is linear; muses; blocks of time; and scarcity are the most fundamental ideas that are challenged. However, the most important misconception that is explored is the idea that ‘writing’ is just one thing. Seven writing processes that form the basis of academic writing are outlined: reading; drafting; framing; editing; summarising; polishing; and finishing. This new understanding of the writing process offers us the opportunity to (a) do one at a time and (b) collaborate with others who have different skills. Both of these are important strategies for not only getting unstuck in the short term, but for writing faster in the medium term and more sustainably over the long term.
