Abstract:
Large-scale, organized philanthropy is a growing enterprise. After religious causes, education is the primary target area for philanthropic giving. Indeed, beyond religious missions, early mega-donors identified K-12 and higher education as ideal sectors to direct private wealth to in order to address social and public concerns. Moreover, elite philanthropy has long worked with educational leaders to create new schools and colleges, systematize standards across professional and academic fields, and provide financial support for advancing postsecondary access and success for underserved students. In what follows, I briefly review major shifts in the field and key ideas, approaches, and educational giving trends that exemplify the interplay of philanthropy and US education in K-12 and higher education.
