Austrian sociology

Chapter 15 in A Modern Guide to Austrian Economics, 2022, pp 283-306 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: I reorient the meaning of "Austrian sociology" toward theories and methodologies established by Austrian economics. Mainstream, contemporary sociology labels Austrian economics as "neoliberalism," which is blamed for many of the world's problems. By more thoroughly and honestly interrogating Austrian economics through a sociological lens, and by including in sociological analyses the basic assumptions of Austrian economics, the State replaces capitalism as the prime mover of social problems. In line with this, the polylogism of Marxian and Durkheimian sociologies is contested by the methodological individualism of an Austrian sociology, while the econocentric vision of society of Austrian economics is decentered by viewing culture and society as codeterminous contexts within which human action takes place. In the end, it will be a difficult struggle to gain a foothold in the fields of sociological subdisciplines, yet the very fact that sociology suffers from a plethora of paradigms and subfields yields opportunities and inroads.
