Chapter 11 in Handbook on Smart Growth, 2022, pp 207-227 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Quality educational opportunities - for both children and adults - are key ingredients to individual and community economic success. In this chapter, we start from the premise that individual and community success requires that all people have "trajectories of opportunity," realistic opportunities to access high quality public education and workforce training options. Without those, cycles of poverty and disenfranchisement continue. However, the smart growth field has largely neglected the issues of education and workforce training opportunities. Moving forward the field must better elevate the interconnections between education, schools, and workforce development and smart growth. We present this case not as an aspiration or normative ideal, but rather as a principle on which smart growth advocates and planning professionals can and should build a much-needed body of knowledge.
