Chapter 18 in Handbook on Smart Growth, 2022, pp 324-350 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The previous chapters in this handbook introduced the concept of smart growth and its governance followed by analyses of issues that were and were not addressed by the 10 original principles of smart growth. Authors have offered evidence that smart growth has been the focus of considerable research and has influenced planning practice throughout the United States. In this concluding chapter, we revisit the conditions smart growth was designed to address and the influence of smart growth on planning practice. We discuss the challenges of smart growth implementation, and we offer recommendations for a "smart growth 2.0" going forward
