Chapter 15 in Research Handbook on the Green Economy, 2024, pp 244-257 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
As we move into a decade of action to accelerate the development of sustainable solutions to the world’s biggest challenges and to deliver on the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the systematic combination of lean thinking with the green economy promises to provide us with a way of fostering and achieving continuous improvement and learning - advancing us towards a waste-free society. In this chapter, we explore the state of the art of lean and green - presenting key emergent themes from this significant area of research - before presenting lean management as a means of moving closer to a greener and more sustainable future. We recognize that building a learning-to-learn capability is a core challenge for the success of individuals and organizations alike. As such, we suggest that the lean practices Hoshin Kanri, A3 management, and Toyota Kata present us with a scaffolding to support and guide us in addressing these important, sustainable learning challenges
