Green services

Chapter 9 in Research Handbook on the Green Economy, 2024, pp 128-140 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter contributes to the field of services and the green economy in two ways. Firstly, it establishes a foundational context for the discourse surrounding services and the green economy by situating the service industry within the broader economic landscape. Research on the service industry has thrived over the past three decades, driven by technological advancements, the liberalization of trade in services, and the expansion of the service sector in both the private and public spheres. Secondly, the chapter seeks to connect various facets of the service economy with the overarching goal of transitioning towards a greener and more sustainable economic development paradigm. As services continue to proliferate within the broader economy, the potential to facilitate a transformation towards a more sustainable industrial model grows. In pursuit of these overarching objectives, the chapter additionally delves into the interconnection between services and the green economy from a sectoral perspective.
