Exploring contemporary visual arts careers in Italy: education, mobility and project work

Abstract: The study explores the patterns of contemporary visual arts (CVA) careers in Italy. Careers in the creative sector have been widely investigated for their peculiarities and unstable structures. However, the work of contemporary visual artists has not received much attention. Careers in CVA are the result of a multitude of social, personal and professional factors, including country of origin, education, networks and mobility. Based on the existing literature and previous work done in the field, the study builds on a longitudinal analysis of the career pathways of emerging contemporary visual artists in Italy. More specifically, the study analyses the relation between the curricula vitae (CV) of artists and career progress, considering together education, professional experiences, networks and mobility. In doing so, attention has been paid to gender disparity and geographical and mobility aspects.
