Competitive intensity: sporting rules generating it and impact on fan demand

Chapter 5 in A Modern Guide to Sports Economics, 2021, pp 57-69 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter develops the lines of the nascent literature on competitive intensity (CI), introduced in the previous chapter. These lines are similar to those identified for the literature on competitive balance (CB). According to Fort and Maxcy (2003), there are two such lines of literature on CB: 1. The evolution of CB over time or as a result of the introduction, disappearance or change in redistribution mechanisms (Analysis of Competitive Balance, ACB). 2. The impact on fans (Uncertainty of Outcome Hypothesis, UOH). Consistent with Fort and Maxcy for CB, this chapter identifies the sporting rules supposed to generate CI and analyses their efficiency (Section 1) before discussing the impact of CI on fan demand (Section 2).
