The politics of retrenchment
Peter Starke
Chapter 3 in Handbook on Austerity, Populism and the Welfare State, 2021, pp 25-40 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The chapter provides an overview of theories and findings on the politics of welfare state retrenchment since Paul Pierson’s seminal contributions on the topic. Starting from an account of the concept of welfare state retrenchment in the comparative social science literature, I reconstruct the main causal mechanisms used to explain the politics of retrenchment in advanced democratic welfare states. Many of these mechanisms and predictions have been empirically tested, challenged or extended by subsequent research. The chapter gives an overview of the empirical state of the art before pointing to some remaining gaps and promising avenues for future research.
