Chapter 17 in Handbook of Economic Nationalism, 2022, pp 299-314 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Many assume that today's populism, nationalism and protectionism is due to the large-scale displacement of industrial work. Interestingly, however, we find that economic nationalist rhetoric in the United States pointing the finger of blame at some trading partners - especially China, Japan and Mexico - while avoiding others. Beyond accusations of improper trade practices, Trump has berated these countries as thieves, rapists, and in association with terrorists. To better understand the dynamics of economic nationalism scholars should assess nationalist rhetoric in addition to trade policies and account for the non-economic motivations behind today's economic nationalism. This chapter posits that today's toxic economic nationalist rhetoric in the US is due to fundamental changes in demographics and culture more so than employment factors. Under the Trump administration attacking other countries for their trade practices has become another opportunity to lash out at non-whites in order to gratify his electoral base.
