Imagining Russia as a state-civilization: ethnocultural and geoeconomic dimensions

Abstract: The chapter analyzes Russia's newly developed national idea of state-civilization as introduced by the authorities in 2012. The idea is assessed in the national ethnocultural context as a way to reduce tensions between Russians and non-Russian minorities. The civilizational idea is also assessed in the international geoeconomic context of Russia's disappointment with the West-centered globalization and the rise of economic and energy projects in the greater Eurasia. As the world is becoming increasingly less Western and more regionalized, Russia is positioning itself as a civilization protective of any foreign interferences and cooperating with those respectful of global diversity in Asia and Europe. The chapter concludes by identifying further challenges for developing the idea of state-civilization.
