Chapter 2 in A Research Agenda for Terrorism Studies, 2023, pp 23-41 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter focuses on those who carry out acts of terrorism, examining the central questions of why people become involved in, and ultimately leave terrorism. The chapter considers what it means to be a ‘terrorist,’ including a critical assessment of the contemporary dominance of a radicalisation-based understanding of terrorist involvement. The analysis emphasises the pluralistic nature of contemporary terrorism research, noting that there is no longer one dominant explanatory model of involvement in terrorism, even if much of this area of study seems subsumed by radicalisation. The chapter concludes by outlining how terrorism studies can and will benefit from methodological and theoretical innovation which can assist in driving research into new directions.
